Philippines is prone to natural hazards like earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis, typhoons, volcanic eruptions because it is located within the Pacific ring of fire. Some of these hazards then become disasters because it had caused damages on the properties, buildings, agriculture, and even lives of people. Sometimes a disaster may leave a person with nothing, no clothes, no food, no house and even loved ones. Just like what happened to Cagayan de Oro city and Iligan city that was hit by typhoon Sendong. This typhoon had leave a deep and painful mark on the heart of the residents of Cagayan and Iligan and other places too that was hit.
Last December 17, 2011, typhoon Sendong, with international name Washi, hit the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. It was very unexpected that it would be a disastrous event. The people at that time were not ready or prepared and some may had their deep sleep at that time. According to Jojo Malig on abs-cbnNEWS.com, typhoon Sendong was the world's deadliest storm on 2011.
Because of this storm, over a thousand died and leaves thousands of victims homeless and some of the members of its family is missing. It doesn't matter if a person's house was washed out but a house being washed out with the family members inside it was very tragic for the one who had survived. It is hard to start again alone with nothing.
The survivors who are homeless was put in evacuation centers. There is a lot of donations came like clothings, medicines, foods, water and others. The needs of the victims are now fulfilled, but how about their psychological functioning? This is one of the effects of the typhoon. The psychological effects may take weeks, months, or years before it appear. The effects include fear of water, always want to be alone, nightmares and others.
It's difficult to be hit by a typhoon like that. Houses and buildings were washed out and lives were taken. This marks on every victims and its hard for them to forget and this may remain as a tragic memory.
